Los Andes

The newspaper was founded in 1883. It openly opposed the then Governor Rufino Ortega, the ministers of his administration and the provincial Congress. During Rufino Ortega’s administration, Adolfo Calle (Los Andes’s founder) suffered two attacks.

Overtime, Los Andes became the most popular newspaper in Mendoza and the voice of the dominant sectors in society.

The arrival of renowned writer and journalist Antonio Di Benedetto to the newspaper as Deputy Editor in 1968 helped the editorial team reinvent themselves. The newspaper covered the arrests, murders and disappearances in the years ahead of the military dictatorship by armed groups, as well as the claims of the victims’ families. Di Benedetto was arrested by the armed forces on the very same day of the 1976 coup. Some of the newspaper’s editors and journalists also went to prison. Immediately, the newspaper started to support the military dictatorship.

Los Andes was owned by the Calle family until the 1990s, when it was purchased by Compañía Inversora en Medios de Comunicación (CIMECO), owned by Grupo Clarín, La Nacion and Spanish company Vocento.

It became the first newspaper in Argentina to have a digital version. Its website was created in 1995. In 2010 Grupo Clarín became the controlling shareholder of the newspaper.
